Detectors
The detector is a custom fabricated device that converts photons into electrons. The photo response of a detector depends on the bandgap of the semiconductor used. Some detectors have internal gain that multiplies the photon-generated electrons in the detector and some do not. This detector multiplication process is called avalanche photodiode (APD) multiplication. Detectors are hybridized to a readout array by means of indium bumps. The indium bump provides an electrical connection between each detector and its associated readout pixel circuitry.

Custom Detectors

Eye Safe InGaAs Detectors
InGaAs detector systems are typically eye safe because they respond to wavelengths in the nationhood of 1.57 micron, which are considered safe for the eye. The 1.57 micron wavelengths are not focused by the eye’s lens and therefore cannot damage the retina of the eye, however, if the intensity is high enough, they can damage the eye’s cornea surface in the form of a severe sunburn. The InGaAs detectors are a well-suited, mature technology for ASC Ladar receivers.

Silicon Detectors
Silicon detectors are used with a visible-light laser whose wavelength depends on the nature of the project. As an example, for under water ladar use, visible blue-green light is the best wavelength because it will penetrate water with the least amount of absorption. Silicon detectors systems are typically not eye safe because they will respond to wavelengths that will penetrate the eye and damage the retina. Silicon detectors are a well-suited mature technology for ASC Ladar receivers.
